A group of live opera performances are transmitted in high
definition video all over the world from the Metropolitan Opera. These live
performances are shown in many venues but mainly at select movie theaters. This
gives opera lovers a chance to be a part of a world leading opera production
with a low price. It also expanded the opera’s fan base. This project started
in the late year of 2006 in the USA and it expanded internationally in 2008.
Throughout the season of 2011/12 there was 11 HD transmissions.
During the 2012/13 season there are 12 operas scheduled. The operas are very well
known, for example Aida, Traviata, and many more. These productions are done
with world renowned singers, for example Deborah Voigt, Jay Hunter Morris, Bryn
Terfel, Dmitri Hvorostovky and much more.
The HD opera opened many doors for opera companies. It
opened many new eyes to opera and helped expand the opera community. In some
ways, opera has always been behind as far as traditions. With technology
getting more advanced everyday, the opera industry needs to follow the
footsteps.
Is watching an HD opera the same as going to a live opera?
Well you do get great detail in these HD live operas from
the net. However, as a singer, I feel you lose a lot of the beautiful colors in a singer’s voice. A
voice has so many colors that even with the finest equipment it is impossible
to capture them all. However, the theatrical part is not replaceable with the
HD transmissions. Being up close and
personal is always the best route.
Opera is a beautiful art. Some people may not have the
opportunity to be a part of it in person but HD live is bringing it to you and
makes it so much easier to capture many new upcoming singers.
